Dreamboat
Published in Hardcover by HarperCollins (February, 1995)
Author: Doug J. Swanson
Average review score:

Swanson's second book is funnier, yet darker, than the first
This second book by Doug Swanson did not suffer from a "sophomore slump." It is as funny as his first book (Big Town), but a little darker. The only fault I can find is a funny, but extraneous subplot with a couple of rather inept filmmakers. An enjoyable read!

How do retirement plans work?
Saving money for retirement is not always easy, knowing where to put your money is perhaps complex with so many options. Depending on your situation, you can choose a plan with various tax consequences. Understanding the options is the first step towards a financially secure retirement.

This step-by-step guide will bring more understanding to the question of how to build a nest egg. The important principles of retirement plan investing are set out in a uncomplicated way. There are practical explanations to help you make sense of the legal and financial restrictions and opportunities. Charts show a visual representation of where you stand now and explain how you can reach your goals.

Will Social Security be enough to live on? According to the American Association of Retired Persons, Social Security benefits will replace 43% of the income you earn during the year before you retire. This income will also not protect you against inflation, so it is wise to plan for your own future.

Did you know there is a way to withdraw money from an IRA without penalty before you officially retire? See page 18. You might also want to consider an education IRA which is not a retirement account, but a vehicle to help pay for a grandchild's education. This handy book shows if you are eligible and what the contribution limits are.

While the information on taxes is comprehensive, you will still want to consult with a professional before making any final decisions. Some of the tax laws might have changed slightly from this edition but overall, the information will make you more aware of the choices you should consider to make the most of your money.

For the City As a Whole: Planning, Politics, and the Public Interest in Dallas, Texas, 1900-1965 (Urban Life and Urban Landscape Series)
Published in Paperback by Ohio State Univ Pr (Txt) (December, 1998)
Author: Robert B. Fairbanks
Average review score:

Excellent summary of the history of planning in Dallas
This book does a very good job of reviewing how the City of Dallas developed from its beginning. It hightlights many of the projects and programs that many people may not have heard about that had serious implications for the future. I wished that it would have gone further than 1965. I found the information very informative.

Handbook for Stabilization of Pavement Subgrades and Base Courses With Lime
Published in Hardcover by Kendall/Hunt Publishing Company (March, 1995)
Author: Dallas N. Little
Average review score:

State of Practice Lime Treatment Summary
Little (1995) provides a state of the practice coverage on lime treatment of pavement subgrades. I found the book to be informative not only for the introduction to limetreatment but also on its correlation to conventional engineering strength measurements used in pavement designs. An Excellent book.

Images of the Untouched: Virginity in Psyche, Myth and Community (The Pegasus Foundation Series, 1)
Published in Paperback by Dallas Institute of Humanities and Culture (01 March, 1982)
Authors: Joanne Stroud, Gail Thomas, and Dallas Institute of Humanities and Culture
Average review score:

well-written analysis of virginity as a concept.
Just as in Joanne Stroud's "The Olympians: Ancient Deities as Archetypes", this novel deals with the Jungian concept of archetypes. An archetype is a similar representation of a concept present in every person's mind despite cultural and difference in generation. Common archetypes are those of a god, a hero, man or woman which are present in every culture. The difference between simple categorization and archetypes is that an archetypal image is percieved as in dreams, visions, and fantasies. The book is divided into 8 parts, each dealing with social, cultural or psychological perceptions of this "virginal archetype." The book does a very in depth job of providing different points of view and opinions about virginity. Even though the different essays may be read separetly, I would recommend reading all of them and then trying to formulate your own opinion. If you are not interested in virginity as a subject, it is still interesting read from a psychological eye-view.

It Rained in Dallas

Average review score:

what if?
The assassination of JFK has been the subject of much debate and speculation. This fictional representation gives the reader pause...what if it were true? The author meshes known and surmised facts with a believeable and entertaining storyline to yield a provocative end product. It's a fun read that makes you wonder...

LA Scala West: The Dallas Opera Under Kelly and Rescigno
Published in Hardcover by Southern Methodist Univ Pr (January, 2001)
Authors: Ronald L. Davis and Henry S., Jr. Miller
Average review score:

More than a coffee-table volume
This history of the early years of the Dallas Opera covers the period from 1957, when the Dallas Civic Opera was inaugurated by Lawrence Kelly and Nicola Rescigno, to 1976, two years after Kelly's death. If nothing else, the profusion of production photographs, many rarely seen, would make this book worth perusal. Ronald L. Davis is a professor of history who has written about opera before. His workmanlike writing style cannot entirely avoid the occasional feeling of simply plodding through descriptions of the productions, with these singers, that producer, that director, et al. Still, overall, he manages to convey the excitement of these years, when the Dallas company brought stars of the caliber of Callas, Sutherland and Zeffirelli, in operas that the Met and other mainstream companies wouldn't touch, such as Alcina, Medea and L'Italiana in Algeri. The brashness and charm of Lawrence Kelly, whose vision started the company and whose charm and persuasiveness often kept it going through financial crises that would have sunk other organizations, emerges clearly as well.

Lectionary Worship AIDS
Published in Audio CD by CSS Publishing Company (December, 1998)
Author: Dallas A. Brauninger
Average review score:

Great resource
Worship Aids for Cycle B is a great resource. The author has written one page for each of the week's readings and includes a call to worship, prayer of confession, suggested hymns and more. This assists in planning a well-organized, focused worship service. She also suggests congregational singing of introits and closing choruses on a monthly rotation. I plan to purchase the other books on the Revised Common Lectionary by this author.
